How to Organise a Wardrobe for TV and Film
Start with the Script
Understand the script. Identify the time period, setting, and character backgrounds. These details determine costume choices. Break down each scene.
Group by Character and Scene
- Separate costumes by character.
- Organise by scene to track changes using rail dividers.
- Label each set of clothes clearly. Use hangers or garment bags.
- Using clear plastic pockets attached to hangers to identify each costume, listing all the accessories for each look.
We like to use these rail dividers to keep costumes organised.
Use Costume Racks
- Allocate a specific rack for each character.
- Use clothing dividers to mark scenes.
We use these collapsible racks.
Invest in Garment Bags
Garment bags protect costumes. Label them to avoid confusion.
We like these transparent ones.
Prepare Backup Costumes
Accidents happen. Have backup costumes for key scenes. Keep duplicates on the same rack for quick access.
Organise by Time Period
If you have multiple eras, group costumes by time period. This keeps costumes relevant and reduces errors during production.
Label Everything
Clear labels prevent mistakes. Use a COSPRO Micro Fine Tagging Gun for an easy solution to label clothing with character names, scene numbers, and any notes.
Store Accessories Separately
- Use small bins for accessories.
- Label and place them near each character's costume rack, this makes accessory management simple.
Care for Costumes
- Ensure regular cleaning.
- Use high quality detergent, read the care labels and know your fabrics and how to care for them.
Handle Specialty Items with Care
Delicate fabrics and period pieces need extra attention. Use padded hangers and separate storage for these items.
Plan Ahead for Last-Minute Changes
- Build in time for any costume adjustments.
- Keep sewing kits and emergency repair tools nearby.
Questions to Ask
- Are your costumes easy to access on set?
- Do you have backups for key items?
